How to obtain a Copy of your Credit File

If, like most people, you have borrowed money (credit card, mortgage or car) then you will have a 'credit file'. And you really should know what's on it. For two good reasons. Firstly, banks, retailers and other credit providers rely on your credit file when deciding whether to lend you money or not. Secondly, it's your reputation that is at stake. If you never see your credit file, you will never know if it's correct until it is too late and then your plans and your future could suffer serious setback.
Having a credit application refused is frustrating and worrying, especially if the credit provider has advised you that your information in your credit file influenced their decision.
One of the most common forms of credit fraud is committed by 'stealing' the identity of another individual. Someone obtains your identity details and uses them to obtain credit for themselves, leaving you with the potential liability for this debt, a damaged credit reputation and the inconvenience of amending your credit file. Obtain a copy of your file within 1 business day via fax, email or post and pay a fee of $23 (accurate as at April 2004)

Payment by credit card 'online' - Go to www.mycreditfile.com.au, look for "Order a copy of your credit file now', click on this link, click on 'Purchase Now' for my credit file. Supply details as requested, specify delivery option and pay by credit card authorization.
Payment by credit card over the phone - Call 02 9464 6000, select Option 1, give your details to the operator as requested. Specify delivery option and pay by credit card.
Payment by adding fee (no credit card required) to your phone bill - Call 02 9464 6000, select Option 1, give your details to the operator as requested. Specify delivery option. You will then be given a reference number. Dial 1902 910 900, press 0 to accept charges and punch in supplied reference number. Your report will be delivered/posted within one business day.
